Simple Solutions for a
Healthy Family Lifestyle

What a healthy family lifestyle does not include...breakfast on the go, lunch is a quick snack or energy bar and dinner is take out. Is the kids' lunch box void of inspiration?

Many American families find it hard to balance a healthy lifestyle with other demands life throws at them. Obesity is on the increase, and it is becoming a national problem.

You know this if it is you. Start and maintain a healthy family lifestyle. Today.

There is a wealth of information available online and in print today to help you achieve your goals. However, you need to find the right strategy which suits your budget and family needs. Just follow these three basic principles to really get that healthy family lifestyle heading in the right direction:

Creating A Healthy Diet

3-5 small meals a day: Skipping a meal is never a good way to reduce your daily food intake. Experts advise that you should always eat breakfast in addition to two other moderate meals every day.

Food Portions: Rather than skip meals, you should try to reduce your portions. Encourage your family to do the same, and use smaller plates to help reduce the portion sizes.

Fruits and Vegetables: Dieticians advise that everyone should eat 5 fruit and vegetable portions every day. Some advise 9-13 to maintain a healthy family lifestyle. Choose different colored fruits and vegetables, and serve them in a variety of ways to make meal time more fun.

Knowledge: Learn about foods and their composition. Learn about good and bad carbohydrates. Eat foods that contain good fat, (i.e. polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat). Know your sugar limit and reduce it.

Drinks: Avoid soda and fruit drinks. If you must have them, limit them to meal times and sugar free options. Learn to drink water more often, especially before meals, so you all eat less.

Food preparation: Avoid frying your food, grill or steam instead. If you must fry use vegetable or sunflower oil instead of fat products.

Processed foods: Avoid processed foods, such as white rice and white bread. Choose whole grain foods such as brown rice instead.

Get Active, Stay Active

An active lifestyle is a healthy lifestyle. You should combine healthy eating habits with regular exercise. Exercise is a good way for your family to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Mom Kids Run

Choose an activity that you and your family can enjoy together. A game of tennis at your local sports center, a soccer game in the park, a bike ride, and even a leisurely walk will significantly improve the health of your family.

Enroll the kids in weekly sporting activities, rather than sit down to video games and TV. Walk more often to places! Allow the children to walk to school, and use the stairs when you can.

Quit Smoking

Finally, stay clear of excessive alcohol, and quit smoking.

Research shows that smoking and passive smoking have an adverse effect on all family members.

Smoking is associated with several illnesses, and it's best to avoid it.

Do It Gradually

Find more information on foods that will help you achieve your healthy lifestyle goals.

Always shop with knowledge by compiling a shopping list, and always stick to it.

Gradually, change your family diet by swapping a regular treat for a healthy alternative. Try this once a week until you have totally revamped your family's diet.

Your plan can only succeed if you have the support of your family. Get your family involved in planning your new lifestyle and you should all be on your way to healthy, longer lives.
