Delectable Meals on a Budget
The old adage that everyone needs daily meat and potatoes just doesn't ring true in today's world. Cuts of beef used to be cheap, when you raised your own steers but now, even that is expensive. People also are not as active as they used to be which means that all of that fat and starch is going to pack on the pounds.
With today's high cost of living and lack of exercise that most people experience, meat and potatoes need to be served very sparingly. Using very little meat and lots of vegetables with herbs and spices can be healthier and easier on your wallet. Getting creative with meals can make you forget how you used to enjoy high cholesterol and fat.
Herbs do not have to be expensive. Buy in bulk or grow your own. Windowsill herb gardens are popular and deliver the freshest (and cheapest) seasonings for budget meals that you can get. Spices can be picked up at dollar stores and in bulk at most grocery stores for just a fraction of what a name brand bottle would cost.
When most people think of cutting back on their food budget, spaghetti and tuna casserole comes to mind. These can get tiresome real quick. Try making spinach lasagna or a quiche with an array of different ingredients. Broccoli, cheese, eggplant, tomatoes or peppers are just a few suggestions for a great quiche. And don't forget to add some of your fresh herbs and seasonings of onion powder and thyme.
