How long do dermal fillers last?

As we age, the volume of facial tissues naturally decreases. The skin loses its elasticity and wrinkles appear. Dermal fillers that replenish lost tissue volume and rejuvenate the face can help in this situation. But what are these miracle drugs and what can happen after their introduction? How long do dermal fillers last?

How do dermal fillers work

As we age, the amount of soft tissue in the face decreases. This process is particularly pronounced in the cheekbones, cheeks and mouth. Under the influence of gravity, the tissues sink down. The result is a distortion of the facial oval. Fillers are used to fill in the lost volume of tissues and fill in wrinkles. It smoothes lines, restores proportions, thickens and smoothes the skin. Dermal fillers, which the doctor inserts under the skin, consist of gel-like substances – hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxyapatite and poly-L-lactic acid. Their application is not accompanied by pronounced discomfort and does not require rehabilitation.

How long does the effect of fillers last?

These drugs have a different duration of action, depending on their composition. Some retain the effect for 6-12 months, while others last two years or more.

What affects the action time of the filler

Various factors influence the time of action of fillers:

  • The place where the filler is injected.
  • The amount of filler injected.
  • The metabolic rate of a particular patient.

The effect of fillers is constantly changing. Immediately after the procedure, it is the most pronounced, and it remains so for about half of the period, after which its effect gradually diminishes. But the process is gradual and imperceptible, so there is no dramatic change in appearance. All fillers have a rejuvenating effect. Their introduction stimulates the production of collagen proteins, elastin and hyaluronic acid, which are a kind of framework for the skin structures. Tissues regenerate during the period of action of the preparations, and the positive effect of the filler remains for a long time.

What filler is suitable in this or that case

It is necessary to choose a dermal filler together with a cosmetologist. Each patient is different, as is their skin, so what was perfect for one may be completely unsuitable for another. The place of insertion is always taken into consideration, as many fillers are designed for specific areas. For example, some fillers are suitable for smoothing out the skin under the eyes, while others are suitable for plump lips or cheeks. Therefore, the first choice should be based on the opinion of a specialist.

What to do if you don’t like the result after the introduction of the filler

Patients who were injected with hyaluronic acid are in a better position. Its effect can be completely stopped by the introduction of the enzyme longidase. Therefore, for those who have never used fillers, it is advisable to start with it. But in any case fillers are preferable to plastic surgery, because they are withdrawn from the body on their own, not remaining in it.
